The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, has called on Secretaries to State Governments (SSGs) across the country to embrace digital tools, strengthen inter-governmental coordination, and adapt to the fast-changing governance landscape in order to deliver more transparent and inclusive policies.

Akume made the charge on Wednesday in Jos, Plateau State, while declaring open the second quarterly meeting of the Forum of the SGF and SSGs under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

With the theme “Understanding the Dynamics in the Roles and Functions of Secretaries to the Government of States,” Akume underscored the pivotal role of the SGF and SSGs as the “engine room” of government. He noted that beyond policy harmonisation and cabinet affairs management, their offices must provide institutional memory, drive advisory functions, and support security coordination at both federal and state levels.

Akume Urges Upgrade In Leadership

Highlighting the rising demands of citizens and the impact of technology on governance, the Akume urged SSGs to constantly upgrade their leadership skills, foster inclusivity, and deepen collaboration across all tiers of government. “Government must move with the times by leveraging digital tools to improve service delivery and accountability,” he said.

In his goodwill message, Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, lauded the Forum as a strategic platform for synergy, reminding participants of the trust reposed in them by Presidents and Governors as their chief advisers. He stressed that SSGs are uniquely placed to influence governance outcomes since crucial memos and decisions flow directly through their offices.

Mutfwang called for stronger federal-state collaboration, stressing that Nigeria is at a critical juncture where all stakeholders must unite to deliver good governance and sustainable development.
