In a seismic shift for South African football, Stanley Nwabali, the 28-year-old Nigerian goalkeeper who became a household name during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has officially parted ways with Chippa United after two transformative seasons.

Nwabali, whose heroics helped the Super Eagles reach the AFCON semi-finals with just 3 goals conceded in 7 matches, confirmed his exit on Thursday.

The move ends a chapter where he played over 50 league games, securing 12 clean sheets and earning the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season award in 2024/25.

“Chippa United gave me a platform to shine globally, but it’s time for the next challenge,” Nwabali posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Sources close to the club reveal contract negotiations stalled over a 30% salary hike demand, amid interest from 5 European clubs including Porto and Union Berlin.

Chippa’s coach, Thabo September, praised Nwabali’s legacy: “He transformed our defense from leaky to lockdown—conceding under 1 goal per game on average.”

The Chiphieshians now scramble for a replacement as they sit 8th in the PSL table with 25 points from 20 matches.

Fans flooded social media with tributes, hailing Nwabali’s 85% save rate and penalty-saving prowess that defined Nigeria’s “Wall of Steel” at AFCON.

As rumors swirl of a €2 million transfer fee, the question remains: Where will the Super Eagles’ No. 1 land next?
