Bolt Driver Recounts How Colleague Staged Fake Trip Just to Start His Car
A Lagos-based Bolt driver has taken to social media to share a frustrating experience of being lured to a pickup location under false pretenses, only to be asked for help by a fellow driver.
Lola Okurin, the driver who experienced the incident, shared his story on the X platform (formerly Twitter), where it has since garnered attention for its ironic twist.
According to Mr. Okurin, the incident occurred years ago while he was working an evening shift in the Ikeja area. He received a ride request that seemed too good to pass up. The destination was Ajah, a notoriously long and traffic-prone route, and it came with a lucrative 1.9x surge pricing.
“Upon getting to the pick-up location along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, a man walked up to my car,” Mr. Okurin wrote. “He asked if I was his driver, and I confirmed I was.”
However, instead of beginning the journey to Ajah, the man made a startling revelation. He identified himself as a fellow Bolt driver and pointed to his own vehicle, which had its bonnet open. The long-distance trip, it turned out, was a ruse.

The stranded driver explained that he was experiencing a battery issue and had ordered the ride specifically to summon another driver for assistance. He requested a jump-start to get his vehicle running again.
“There was no trip to Ajah; it was all a setup,” Mr. Okurin lamented in his post.
Despite his disappointment at losing a high-value fare, he felt compelled to assist a colleague in need and used his own car’s battery to jump-start the stranded vehicle. The fraudulent ride request was subsequently cancelled.
The experience left Mr. Okurin feeling both amused and exasperated. In his post, he humorously noted that he “swore for him for two good weeks” following the incident.
Reacting, an X user @josephgege noted that he had once done something similar.
“I’ve done something similar. Needed a battery to start the car and so I booked the ride but in my case I paid after he helped me out,” he said.
Others praised Lola’s kind gesture, with some assuring that the universe would repay him in unexpected ways.
