FG Inaugurates 15 Member PenCom Board, Pledges Stronger Pension System for Workers
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has inaugurated the Board of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s pension system and safeguarding the retirement savings of federal workers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Akume said the inauguration reflects the government’s resolve to build a pension system that is transparent, resilient, and widely trusted. He charged members of the new board to provide strategic direction, policy guidance, and effective oversight in line with the provisions of the Pension Reform Act 2014 and other relevant frameworks.
“Today’s inauguration underscores the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to a pension system that is transparent, resilient and trusted by all,” he said, urging the board to uphold integrity, accountability, and sound judgment in the discharge of their duties.

The SGF cautioned PenCom members against interference in the commission’s day-to-day operations, stressing the importance of respecting established governance structures. He also reiterated the administration’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address outstanding pension liabilities and ensure retirees receive their entitlements with dignity, certainty, and timeliness.
Speaking on behalf of the board, the chairman, Opeyemi Agbaje assured the government of its commitment to upholding corporate governance principles and maintaining a clear distinction between oversight and management functions. He also pledged that the board would align with the administration’s agenda of leveraging pension funds to support national development.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, noted that ongoing reforms have strengthened pension administration and positioned PenCom as a key institution in safeguarding retirement savings.
In her remarks, the Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Bridget Oloworaran, expressed optimism about working with the new board, highlighting the importance of collaboration in driving institutional performance, innovation, and improved service delivery.

The newly inaugurated PenCom board is chaired by Opeyemi Agbaje and includes key members such as Hafiz Muhammad Kawu Ibrahim (Commissioner, Technical), Samuel Chigozie Uwanda (Commissioner, Inspectorate), Charles Efe Sylvester Emukowhate (Commissioner, Finance), and Bello Abubakar Malabu (Commissioner, Administration).
Other members represent critical institutions and stakeholders, including the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and the National Insurance Commission.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by management staff of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the National Pension Commission.
